drugs and alcohol - eastenders and hollyoaks

If anyone has recently been wtaching eastenders and hollyoaks recently, you probably noticed that there is an issue of substance abuse in both of them. Shirley from eastenders is drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and there is drug abuse in hollyoaks.

Alcoholism and drug addiction is a reacurring theme throughout most soaps at some point or another and thinking about it, actualy many other television programmes.

Issues like this can be seen as 'being bad' bacuse it goes against social norms set by society, and people are scared to talk about these things. But how much do you have to drink to become an 'alcoholic' or how many drugs do you have to take to become a 'drug addict', this is why these issues in my opinion are part of 'being bad' as for example drinking is something most people like to do socially, down the pub with mates or to relax, but it would seem that there is a line upto where it is ok to drink or do drugs and then there is overstepping the line leading to addiction. This is then not 'being bad' but it becomes an illness. But at which stage is it classed as a social activity and how easy is it to lead to addiction.

Personally I think that the point as to when someone should be classed as an alcoholic is when they become alcohol dependant. If alcohol is neccassary in order to get through the day, or feel normal, then they have a problem.

Drugs and alcohol is such a difficult topic. I'm indecisive as to where the margin is as to drinking this amount is wrong, and doing this drug is wrong.
According to the law such drugs as marijuana are illegal in the UK. So in relation to the law in the UK, it is being bad to use it.
But morally, socially and ethically, is it truely the act of being bad?
Once one has added up the advantages and disadvantages of doing an act and the advantages outweigh the negatives i believe it can be seen from ones perspective as not being a bad act.
but in the eyes of others virtues, ethics and morals it could be completely opposite.
The decision of what comes under being bad will never be decided. And i sincerly hope this.

Following on from your blog, i feel that in some ways drinking socailly can lead to being dependant alot easier than people think. For example, if your out all weekend drinking and then during the week feel yourself thinking 'i would love a drink',. then if you act upon this and become a person who drinks both in the week and weekends for no special occasion,or every social occasion and only feeling happy once consumed some sort of alcohol then that is where it leads on to become dependant. And therefore not classed as a social activity but a concern thus overstepping the line.
